CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

There are 12,261 millionaires per square mile in Monaco. That’s one out of every three residents. The poverty rate is zero. But most people who work in Monaco don’t actually live there. 30,000 French and 5,800 Italians commute to Monaco every day. Monaco also has more police per capita than any other place on Earth. One police officer for every seventy-three residents. The principality itself is smaller than Central Park in New York City. Of the 38,000 residents, 3,500 live in Monte Carlo. Government rules ban citizens from gambling or even working at the casino. But they do live longer than residents of most other countries. It has the world’s highest average life expectancy at 87 years of age, beating out Japan, Hong Kong, and Liechtenstein.

When they checked into the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Flynn had a vague memory of being there before. The magnificent and palatial Belle Èpoque structure stood right next to the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Lavish columns, arches, and spires embellished the bright white façade. Statuettes of naked nymphs adorned arched doorways and fountains. Flynn remembered the bronze statue of Louis the XIV on horseback in the cathedral-like lobby with its marble floors and cream white walls, glass-domed ceiling, and massive crystal chandelier.

Their Diamond Suite was no less opulent, if a little more modern. Anya stood on the balcony overlooking the Mediterranean and Port Hercules. She beckoned Flynn over. As he joined her, he remembered standing on a similar balcony with a dark-haired beauty with a dangerous smile and madness in her eyes. He had raced her on a mountain road, braving hairpin turns as she flashed that seductive smile and sped ahead, nearly forcing him off the edge of a cliff. He had faced her across the baccarat table at the Casino De Monte-Carlo and won. Later, when she seduced him, she bit his lip, drawing blood. For her, sex and violence were and the same, and more than one man had lost his life between her thighs.

“James, where are you?”

Flynn shook off the old memories to focus on the present. “Here. With you. Taking in this magnificent view.”

“Are you still worried about that crazy American lady?”

“I’m more worried about what your husband is planning.”

“I don’t see the Fancy in the harbor, so I’m thinking he’s already at sea.”

“Then there’s no time to lose.”

“I agree. Oleg often takes day trips to Plage les Fossettes at Cap Ferrat. There’s good snorkeling, a beautiful coastline, and a private beach.”

Flynn nodded and looked over the edge of the terrace. Two large, pale, naked people bobbed around a black bottom infinity pool on the terrace below, one with red hair, one with a bald head. “We’ll need a boat of our own.”

“I already arranged for a Sunseeker Superhawk with the equipment you requested. It’s berthed down below in Port Hercules.”

“When do we leave?”

Anya smiled. “Unless you have to pee, I was thinking maybe now.”

Since neither Flynn nor Anya had a license to drive a motorized pleasure craft, their chartered Sunseeker Superhawk came with its own skipper and first mate.
